IKON

I took a trip on this fine and rain-ridden day, to the beautiful IKON gallery in Birmingham...

The IKON eastside in Digbeth was sadly closed today, so I was unable to see the Rhoji Ikeda audio visual I've been wanting to check out. However, in these circumstances, me and a couple of my art minded friends went to the IKON on Oozells Street. Firstly, I'd like to comment on the architecture of this place- I understand that the point of the IKON is that you have go inside to see the gallery- but I have a love for buildings and this is no exception. Glass elevators that sing from high to low notes, curving staircases, glass sitting next to brick and stone. It really is beautiful.
On the 1st floor an exhibition was taking place. Victor Alimpiev, a Russian artist, is having videos shown at the IKON based on his new work- To Trample Down An Arable Land. I only watched a few minutes of this, however I would like to go back and watch it fully. From what I saw, the imagery was truly beautiful (applause for the film maker) only lasting just over 7 minutes and admission being free, what a great way to spend a free afternoon.
Second floor show cased a series of mixed media oil paintings. These were really interesting. From a far they looked almost photographical, however as you get closer the painter, Semyon Faibisovich, ( also a Russian Artist ) shows his artistic skills. I couldn't possibly describe his brush work, really intriguing. The paintings are blunt and almost raw in parts, which i love. Images of everyday moments such as, people waiting for the bus or shopping. Highly recommended!

  1. Hello jess, you have created a very interesting wee article on your outing to the Icon gallery. You describe the paintings as intriguing, blunt and raw... sure your not a fine artist??. Nicely laid out and informative blog, especially like the straight to the point personal introduction, good luck with learning Italian, its a nightmare.
