combine to create.

Ok, so your almost up to date.

Emily

Lovely lovely Emily, also known as em[ii]ly l[ii]ke in the blogger universe, and I are teaming up for our FMP. (final major project) This decision came when working together on the film went so bloody well and little talks after about our garments and why we are in fashion let us see similarities in our work and we both agree that we'd work incredibly well together.

EXCITING STUFF!

Fashion film.

I've just realised I've been a right dick and not informed you of the Fashion Film I and three other students made a couple of weeks ago!

Right. We got the brief, it was to make a fashion film about anything but it had to be 2 minutes long. My group consisted of Rob (our graphics superstar), Siobhan (our foundation student star) and Emily (my now, partner in crime!..more on this later).
We all basically decided that we didn't want to go for something safe, this was the only time we'd have to do something like this so we were going to give it some.
We brainstormed, searched through metros, gossiped and finally came up with an idea. This idea then spiralled and became so much more immense, with so much depth that we couldn't now pin it down to one concept.
So
We were completely annoying everyone by being completely silent in class discussions, silent to friends, silent to everyone!
We got seriously lucky with a room to shoot in, I'd like to thank Bonds for their help because that space was just perfect.

For a week we worked non stop on this piece, and I am still, even now, not going to tell you the base concept. Decide for yourselves, drop a comment, I'd love to hear your interpretation.

Play loud.
Play open minded.
Don't blink.

Ed-u-tank-tion.

So I'm sitting here in my dressing gown, holding a mug of decaf and munching my way through the blogs that keep my fashion excitement non stop, and I come across two things on Tank that would very much like to steal. I wouldn't even feel guilty. But I guess I could buy them too. Anyways....

First there are these rings by a RCA graduate name Gisele Ganne and these pieces do the opposite of what I ring is naturally to represent in society. They are for divorce, break ups and other types of mourning. Which I find hilarious as Valentines comes closer. Right on time Gisele. Right on time. I want one, even if they are slightly (maybe the word 'slightly' shouldn't be used) tacky? But yeah.. I'm sold.

It's my 18th tomorrow!
And I have been very lucky with my presents (yes I have nearly all of them already) but yes I crave these shoes. They look dangerous. Yes, I could slip, break the glass, slice open my feet and be stranded in the middle of town, but HELL it'd be worth it. They are amazing! Yom yom yom.

Between The Wars 6

I was having trouble with deciding what to design, I had lots of ideas but something wasn't quite right. I had a head full of design and needed it to get out, so I decided to make a huge page in my sketchbook and write down, and draw, whatever I had in my head. From this, I found my final design. Above shows my print on white chiffon for the skirt. With the design, I am keeping this gap between the legs from previously, but making the top much higher and dropping the back.

Between The Wars 5

As this project was hugely about print, in my textiles sketchbook I experimented with different ideas from research from my RAF Cosford trip mostly.

I started to look into Art Deco more, looking at the shapes of architecture and pattern and I got really interested in the shapes of the Chicago worlds fair poster I had found from that time and wanted to involve it into my design somehow.

I then took a RAF Cosford picture which I liked, a sort of cross in metal bolted shut, I then added these together, joining lines to create a pattern and to make the shapes link.

When making this print I followed the research I had found about art deco prints, and that they seem to follow a grid or such like as I have shown in my sketchbook. I made this a priority as it is important on the brief that this is Art Deco inspired.

I sampled with this print using techniques such as heat transfer and felt that it just wasn't bold enough but I really liked the print so I decided to do a screen print, for a sleek print on my dress.
I continued to experiment though, mainly with expandex. It was really successful and I loved the effect that it made with my print. However as I am planning to use chiffon, the technique wouldn't work well on this fabric, so I decided to keep with my screen and keep expandex in mind for other projects.
